A found button
Sewn onto a rough wool jacket,
a swirl of black and gray
saved once from an unsure fate
and then safely tucked away
into the coat’s old pocket
til it was carelessly strewn
on the sidewalk, near the
mailbox, left to face its doom.
By intuition or by luck,
I came upon it on my way,
for I knew the button had been lost
and there it was, plain as day.
